About Us

Described by BBC Music Magazine as “an immaculately blended, responsive, interactive consort,” the Gents of St John’s is a professional vocal ensemble made up of the choral and organ scholars of the Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge. As members of the College Choir, the Gents sing seven services a week under the direction of Christopher Gray.

They boast a warm, expressive sound for which both the Choir and the Gents are famous, and are noted for their versatility, with a repertoire ranging from early sacred music and folk songs to more modern close-harmony arrangements of jazz standards, pop classics, and contemporary hits.

This season, tours are taking the Choir to London’s Wigmore Hall, The Luxembourg Philharmonie and concert halls across The Netherlands and Sweden. In most recent years, the Gents have toured to the USA (Chicago, Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia amongst others) and have had the privilege to perform at the Cadogan Hall, the Royal Albert Hall and the Sydney Opera House. In addition to regular BBC broadcasts, the Gents have been guests on Radio 3’s In Tune.

The Gents have built up an extensive discography, performing many of their own arrangements. In December of 2017, the Gents released their latest CD, White Christmas. The Gents have an evolving outreach portfolio and are keen to spread their reach to wider audiences in the UK and abroad.
