Thomas Watkin
Bass 2026 –
I’m the new Junior Organ scholar at St John’s, beginning my undergraduate degree in Music. I come from sunny West Sussex, but I first came to St John’s not so long ago as a chorister! After leaving school, I spent a gap year as the organ scholar at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.
Favourite choral composer?
Having been immersed in his music as a chorister, I always come back to the great Herbert Howells.
What music do you enjoy outside of church music?
I love Ravel’s piano music – my favourites are Le tombeau de Couperin and Miroirs. I also play the trumpet and like big band jazz.
What do you love to do aside from music?
Away from the organ loft I have a keen interest in railways, and can often be found bringing my bike with me on the train for a ride through the countryside.
What are you most looking forward to this academic year?
Settling (back!) into life at St John’s, and accompanying services on the brand new Willis/Harrison organ in Chapel.
