James Gooding

Bass 2026 –

I am very excited to join the Gents this year. I have just completed my MPhil in Music at the University of Cambridge and sang in the Choir of Trinity College last year. I grew up in Somerset, where I was a chorister at the stunning Wells Cathedral before continuing my studies at Royal Holloway University of London for my undergraduate degree.

What is the most memroable performance in which you have participated?

A world premiere of Ben Rowarth's The Fall with Siglo de Oro at Wigmore Hall. This was an incredibly powerful performance which included choir, violin soloist, and electronics!

Favourite piece of choral music?

Hmmmmm, it would have to be Poulenc's Figure humaine, an absolute masterpiece!

Favourite piece beyond choral music?

I'm a massive fan of RAYE! Her album THIS MUSIC MAY CONTAIN HOPE. is absolutely incredible, and I could listen to it on repeat forever.

What do you love beyond singing?

I love a country walk, as one from Somerset does! I also love to cook and host dinner parties for friends and family.

What are you most looking forward to this academic year?

It has to be the Gents at the Maypole. Some very fun repertoire over a very merry evening!
